Port News: Marine parks, smacking and topless sun bathing
Selected stories from the Port News web site:
- Residents rally over marine park
- Smack ban ‘a step too far’
- Getting your gear off’s not a transparent issue
Does recreational fishing, or even professional fisheries, outrank environmental concerns? Does smacking really lead to child homicide (and will the people who beat and end up killing their children - or their partner’s children - pay any attention to a smacking ban anyway)? Do self-proclaimed moral guardians have the right to force their opinions on the general public? And does every issue really need to devolve into an emotional, polarised shout-fest?
Fred Nile’s recent attempt to “clean up” beaches seems to have gone nowhere. The general public don’t seem to care too much about a few women going topless on the beach. What a lot of people do seem to care about is the concept of sun bathing generally, with respect to sun cancer risks. There’s no such thing as a healthy tan, people!
Another thing many are concerned about is attempts by minority religious groups to impose their conservative agenda on the rest of us, instead of doing anything useful about significant issues such as health, education, welfare, the environment, transport and infrastructure. Too busy being offended - and making sure we all know about it - to do anything constructive.
That’s our rant for the day. Your comments welcome.
